Appalachian Power plans to upgrade the power grid in Virginia by making improvements to the transmission infrastructure. The Central Virginia Transmission Reliability Program provides a new electrical source to the region, increases reliability to customers and supports the retirement of aging infrastructure. Work for the project is expected to happen in phases over the next several years in Albemarle, Amherst, Appomattox, Campbell and Nelson counties.
Company officials plan to submit an application to the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) in January 2021 requesting approval for three phases of the project: Joshua Falls – Gladstone, Amherst – Reusens and Shipman – Schuyler. Appalachian Power representatives prepared the application by reviewing future land use, environmental impacts and input that property owners provided during several in-person and virtual community open houses in 2019 and 2020.
