GlendaleArea Improvements


Appalachian Power plans to increase electric reliability by making upgrades to the transmission system in southwest Virginia. The Glendale Area Improvements Project includes building 3 miles of new transmission line, a new substation and removing an existing substation in Carroll County.

The company received approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission to begin work on the Glendale Area Improvements Project. Construction is expected to start in early 2020 and conclude in early 2022. Once complete, the company will remove the Cliffview Substation on Deer Haven Road in Galax and retire 14 miles of transmission line in Carroll and Wythe counties. This project also includes removing a substation in Wythe County and adding upgrades at other substations in Carroll, Grayson and Wythe counties.

Project Updates

04/27/2020: Crews plan to begin tree clearing, access road and substation construction this spring. Transmission line construction is set to start this summer. Company representatives expect construction to conclude by early 2022.

9/19/2019: Appalachian Power received approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission to begin work on the Glendale Area Improvements Project. Appalachian Power will directly contact affected landowners in the project area to discuss next steps. The company plans to begin construction early next year and conclude in early 2022.

12/20/2018: Appalachian Power filed the Glendale Area Improvements Project with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) to receive approval. The SCC will take approximately 6 months to review the project. Following approval, landowners along the line route will be contacted by Emerald Energy, the right-of-way contractor representing Appalachian Power.

11/07/2018: Appalachian Power determined a proposed line route for the Glendale Area Improvements Project. The route was determined after a review of future land use, environmental impacts, and input gathered from property owners and community members. The company in December will ask the Virginia State Corporation Commission to review and approve the project. Following approval, landowners along the line route will be contacted by Emerald Energy, the right-of-way contractor representing Appalachian Power.

8/08/2018: Appalachian Power held an open house on August 2 to introduce proposed study segments, answer questions related to the project and gather feedback from the community. The company will utilize the information gathered to determine a proposed line route.

7/11/2018: Appalachian Power will host an informational open house to introduce the proposed study segments, answer questions related to the project and gather feedback from the community. The open house will be Thursday, August 2 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Galax High School, 200 Maroon Tide Dr., Galax.

The company will use galvanized steel double-circuit lattice tower structures and monopole structures to construct the new transmission lines. Proposed structures will vary depending on the location.
